In the wake of the expenses scandal and other issues, the next election will be a time when some people will not vote or will look beyond the main parties to see what other groups have to offer. The strongest of them are seeking to be part of the democratic process and being given appearances on “BBC Question Time”.

They are not about more of the same, they are radical in the way we say our Gospel is radical. Should we engage with groups who, like the BNP, say they are “the Christian Party”? Or should we help our churches make a clear witness against them and develop a dialogue as the Christian conscience of the mainstream?

This will be our first in a BCAN series for the election year. We are delighted that our main speaker will be Revd Dr Andrew Davey, the Urban Affairs specialist for the Archbishop’s Council of the Church of England. He has been leading in the preparation of a report concerning working within communities where radical parties are gaining support.

All About Me: A Critical Look at the Self-Esteem Movement Sat 23rd Jan

This event will explore the concepts of identity and self esteem, as well as how they are understood and taught in contemporary society: Glynn will critically analyse the modern approaches to understanding and promoting self-esteem. He will then present some biblically- based alternatives, considering how self esteem fits into the broader framework of Christian values. Lizzie will talk from her experiences of delivering the Hope's Place programmes on identity and self esteem to young people at risk of exclusion from school. She will discuss our pedagogical ideology and technique, sharing our story and stories from the lives of course participants.

Glynn Harrison works for the Academic Unit of Psychiatry at Bristol University, where he has the position of Norah Cooke Hurle Professor of Mental Health. Alongside his extensive research into mental disorders, including his most recent book‚ Recovery from Schizophrenia, Glynn is a lay minister at Christ Church, Clifton and lectures frequently on issues of psychiatry and faith.

Lizzie Thomas has been working for Hope's Place as an education programme facilitator since graduating over a year ago. She has a degree from the University of Bristol in Early Childhood Studies and is involved in the children's ministry at Christ Church Clifton. She is also currently training to be a counsellor with Network.

I anticipate these might book up very quickly and Rosa has asked for a relatively small number of particpants. The days follow on from each other.

The charge is £25 each day (£50 in all)

Led by exciting new conductor, Nicholas Bromilow, a talented group of young musicians will perform Handel’s Messiah. Bromilow recently finished school at Clifton College where he received the worshipful company of musicians’ prize. Both Bromilow and the Clifton Harmonic Ensemble will make their debut with this production. This Ensemble consists of musicians from London music colleges and the Bristol schools’ Philharmonia Orchestra, while the choir is made up of singers from Clifton College and the Royal Welsh College of music. They will be joined by up and coming soloists, Stephanie Sprag, James Eager, Josef Werker, and Christopher Preston Bell. All proceeds are going to Hope’s Place. We are looking for people motivated by their Christian faith to work with us to support prisoners being released from prison in Bristol. Could this be you, or your church?

“Basic Caring Communities” in Bristol is a new initiative which will provide genuine support to prisoners trying to settle back into the community. The intention is to offer regular supportive contact from a group of concerned volunteers committed to helping the ex prisoner resettle effectively in the community and not re-offend. Coming out of prison can be a frightening and lonely experience. The wish to “go straight” can be very strong, but often the support and help is simply not there. Many prisoners walk out of the prison gate with no one to welcome them back into the community. No wonder then that 3 in 5 prisoners are re-convicted within two years of leaving prison.

What can we do? The “Basic Caring Communities” initiative is a partnership between ISR, PACT (Prison Advice & care Trust) and the Prison Service and we will provide training support and encouragement to volunteers. The role of the volunteers is to work as part of a co-ordinated group to provide a warm human experience of community and practical support.

This is a real opportunity for people motivated by their Christian faith to make a difference to the lives of others and we would like to invite you to become involved in the scheme.

Human Rights Council, facing a draft resolution by the Arab and Islamic blocs that seeks to endorse the biased Goldstone Report—a 500-page document that falsely accuses Israel of “deliberate attacks” against civilians during its defensive war against Hamas rocket attacks last January. Adoption of this dangerous text will trigger proceedings toward the indictment and prosecution of Israeli leaders and officers in the International Criminal Court. What’s at stake is the very survival of democratic societies under the assault of terrorists—enemies of human rights who cynically invoke its protective cover.

The debate began yesterday and reaches its climax today. UN Watch will be there to address the assembled delegates. Representing us will be none other than Col. Richard Kemp, former commander of the British forces in Afghanistan, an expert in military strategy, and a hero of our time. Col. Since then her book based on her research, ‘Being White in the Helping Professions: Developing Effective Intercultural Working’, has been published. Faithnetsouthwest’s Annual General Meeting and Conference takes place on 6 October 2009, at the Taunton Catholic Centre, The Mount, Taunton TA1 3NR – highlighting the themes of Inter Faith Week and the events taking place during the Week.

The AGM starts at 10am. The conference will start between 10.30am-45am, depending when the AGM ends, please arrive prepared for the earlier start time. The conference will end at 3.30pm.

One of the key aims of the conference is to promote the aims of Inter Faith week and to ensure the aims and objectives of the week are pursued beyond Inter Faith Week itself, these aims are:
to strengthen good inter faith relations at all levels to increase awareness of the different and distinct faith communities in the UK, in particular celebrating and building on the contribution which their members make to their neighbourhoods and to wider society to increase understanding between people of religious and non-religious belief.

Presentations will be made by the Right Reverend Mike Hill - the Bishop of Bristol, Warwick Hawkins from the Cohesion and Faiths Division of the Department for Communities and Local Government and Farooq Siddique from the Government Office of the South West. There will also be an opportunity to hear more about the work faith groups are doing to support the local community, and workshops on engagement with faith communities and how faith communities can raise the profile of their work in the community and get their voices heard. There will be workshop sessions to enable everyone attending to give their views, as well as an opportunity to give questions to the presenters. The conference should be of interest to all faith groups and organisations who want to work with them on community issues and find out more about them.

This will be our first event since the creation of our new membership structure. Membership is free and the criteria for membership are set out in our objectives and membership code of conduct. Full and associate members are entitled to participate in our interactive website, have priority booking for forthcoming events and access to briefings and other information provided by Faithnetsouthwest – including our quarterly newsletter and fortnightly e-bulletin. Membership also gives the opportunity to have a say in forming priorities for the work of Faithnetsouthwest and receiving advice on developing community projects and working with faith communities. Full members are also eligible for nomination for membership of the Faithnetsouthwest Board of Directors.

Chris Egitto, a Bristol businessman and leader of the newly formed Bristol TBN group will talk about his involvement in Hagar, a project in Cambodia where businesses provide training and employment for ex-trafficked women, and TBN developments in the Bristol area.

Fairtrade Ambassadors - We Need YOU!

Dear Fairtrade Supporter

As part of our aims this year to get more speakers into schools and workplaces, the Bristol Fairtrade Network is aiming to set up a team of Fairtrade Ambassadors in the City.

Our first training will focus on schools, with the aim of being able to provide a speaker to support the screening of 'Our Big FT Adventure' which Unchosen are planning to bring to high schools in Bristol in Nov/Dec, as well as being able to respond to requests from schools and other groups for talks/workshops during Fairtrade Fortnight. This would be a huge boost to our Fairtrade schools work and a great way to spread the word about Fairtrade in the City.

We are planning the first training session on Saturday 26th September 10-1.30pm and it would be great if you can be involved.

If you would prefer to only speak to a certain age group or only go into workplaces, not schools, or have time availability limitations, that is absolutely fine, you can specify that on the day. The training will cover basic Fairtrade presentations and also some fun games and exercises that can be used with different ages. It will be relaxed and fun and refreshments will be provided.

If you are interested and can attend the training, please let me know by 10th August so we can see what numbers we have and plan an appropriate venue.

Recent figures suggest that 1 in100 women has a clinically diagnosed eating disorder and over half have a 'serious issue with food' that wouldn't be clinically diagnosed but causes them significant trouble. Many sufferers find that the Church is sadly not as supportive as it could be, due to lack of understanding and ignorance. This workshop affords those in church leadership the opportunity to explore the relationship between church, spirituality and eating disorders and consider how the church could better support both sufferers and carers.

This training day offers the opportunity to explore some of the less-discussed questions associated with eating disorders, such as how they relate to spirituality and the impact they have on men. Through a variety of lecture-style and discussion-based seminars, participants will be encouraged to reflect on how good practice in responding to eating disorders can be developed. We will also consider how partnerships between carers, service providers and churches can offer a better, more comprehensive care strategy and discuss how to recognise the limitations of each of these roles and when further help needs to be sought.

Crofts End Church in St George are looking for volunteers from other churches to work together to restore and re-paint all 55 park benches and a vandalised shelter in St George Park.

Each day between 9am - 1pm the church will be working with volunteers from the local community to undertake the tasks and to also build relationships throughout the project week, with the aim of sharing faith if opportunities arise.

A free community party has been arranged for volunteers at the end of the week.

CHURCHES ENCOURAGED TO TRY LIBERATING APPROACH TO MISSION

To prepare for the beginning of a new term, churches are being encouraged to adopt a more liberating and holistic approach to impacting their communities. The Evangelical Alliance is challenging churches to implement the Square Mile programme during the month of September for a fresh start to the academic year and to share testimonies and stories in order to inspire others in mission.

“Church leaders can often struggle to mobilise their congregation into outreach programmes that are time or energy intensive or have a high embarrassment or fear factor but Square Mile offers a fresh and freeing perspective”, said Krish Kandiah, Executive Director of Churches in Mission.

He continued: “Firmly grounded in Biblical teaching, this material offers inspiring not guilt-inducing motivation to mission. After a well-earned summer rest, let us hit the ground running in September by releasing Christians up and down the country to go the extra mile for Jesus in the year ahead.”

Churches that have already piloted the Square Mile resource have told of how it helped them grasp a biblical yet practical approach to mission and identify not only the needs within the square mile in which they are located, but also the outreach opportunities that church members are already engaged in.

Martyn Saunders, Vicar of All Saints Islington, said: “Square Mile certainly kickstarts a renewed vision for mission and social action in the community through the church members. We ran the programme initially with a small group of mums and the effect was a tangible increase of enthusiasm for reaching out to others. Our church has realised that the effects of focusing on whole-of-life spirituality are immediate and long-lasting.”

The Square Mile resources use inspiring real life stories to look at a biblical, holistic approach to reaching out to neighbours and covers the four dimensions of Mercy – demonstrating God’s compassion to the poor and needy; Influence – being salt and light in the public life of the community; Life Discipleship – living out our faith in our everyday life and Evangelism – faithful and relevant communication of the gospel.

The resources include Bible studies, expert theological reflection from Bishop Tom Wright, Elaine Storkey and Tim Keller, the inspiration from well-known practitioners such as Shane Claiborne, Jim Wallis, Mark Greene and J John, as well as powerful and moving stories from churches around the United Kingdom.

The Square Mile DVD, accompanying workbook and online resources (including powerpoint presentations and service outlines) function as a four-week course designed to be used individually, in small groups or as four themed services as a whole congregation. Stop the Traffik: North Bristol

An evening to raise awareness of people traffiking in Bristol and to find out what we can do to campaign against it. The meeting is this Thursday 25th June at 7.30pm. It's happening at Oasis Academy Brightstow (old Portway school) in Shire. There will be a police officer there who investigates traffiking in our city, and a woman who runs another anti-traffiking group in Bristol. Please come if you can and/or spread the word to anyone else who might be interested.

Christians Urged to Urgently Sign Petition over 'Gagging of Free Speech' on Biblical View of Sexual Conduct and Marriage

CHRISTIANS across the UK have been urged to sign a petition calling on the Prime Minister to abandon plans to prevent Christians from openly explaining what they believe the Bible says about sexual conduct.

he Christian Legal Centre, which has represented many Christians in high profile cases where employers have denied Christians the right of freedom of speech on moral issues, has placed a Petition on its website (www.ccfon.org/petition.php) for individuals to sign on-line, or download and encourage fellow church members to sign up to before posting on to CCFON, which will hand collated petitions to the Queen, Prime Minister and Leader of the House of Lords. CCFON believes there will be “devastating consequences” to Christian witness if the Coroners and Justice Bill goes through Parliament as it stands.

Andrea Minichiello Williams, barrister and founder of the CLC says few Christian leaders or individuals realize that buried deep within the Bill is a clause which could prevent any Christian openly stating what the Bible says, and Christians have believed for 2,000 years, about issues such as homosexual conduct or even marriage.

She said: “No-one would imagine that a Bill to do with Coroners could contain anything about free speech and with all the media attention on MP expenses, this vital issue is going unreported by the media. If it got through as it stands, it would have devastating consequences for Christian witness and integrity in the UK. Church leaders and individuals Christians answering questions about their faith could well find themselves the subject of a police investigation and arrest just for speaking and living according to the Bible’s teaching on sexuality and marriage.”

Members of the House of Lords are likely to debate the clause on 23^rd June (unless date gets pushed back due to pressures of parliamentary timetable), and Mrs Williams urges Christians across all denominations to log on to www.ccfon.org/petition.php and act immediately.

The petition reads: “Preserving the sanctity of life and freedom of speech are vitally important to the preservation of liberty and good governance under the rule of law in the United Kingdom. These are under immediate threat by measures in the Coroners and Justice Bill. We the undersigned, therefore, petition HM the Queen, the Prime Minister and the Leader of the House of Lords to:

1) Protect the value of human life in the UK by opposing proposed amendments authorizing state-sanctioned assisted suicide; and 2) Protect freedom of speech by abandoning its opposition to the free speech protection clause currently within the sexual orientation hatred offence which preserves the right to, discuss, criticise and urge to refrain from certain forms of sexual conduct or practices.”

CCFON is also co-ordinating a Prayer Meeting on June 22, 6.30 -9pm at Emmanuel Centre, 9 -23 Marsham Street, Westminster, London SW1P 3DW, where Christians are invited to attend and bring their friends with them.

Last Saturday we met at St Stephen's Cafe in the centre of Bristol and Marvin Rees led us through some 'musings' on the recession and how, not only as individual Christians but as gathered Church in the City we might be able to respond.

The subject matter brought about lots of discussion and those that gathered seem to have a real passion for the subject and also the need for a considered response. So watch this space!!

Inter-religion camp for kids in Palestine

Human Supporters Organisation based in Palestine is running an inter-religion camp this summer for Christian, Muslim and Samaritan children to learn about each others' faiths and have fun together. This is a crucial part of uniting Palestine both now and in the future, to see the end to violence.

They need volunteers and any level of sponsorship from supporter groups to be able to run the camp.

Marvin Rees is a Programme Manager for the NHS Delivering Race Equality in Mental Healthcare programme.

He is a longtime Christian with interest in understanding the call of church in the world. He has worked with Sojourners, a US campaign group magazine looking at intersection of Faith, culture, politics and their editor in Chief Jim Wallis, author of God's Politics as well as working and studing under Rev. Dr. Tony Campolo.

Marvin has also worked for Tearfund and spent 5 years as a BBC journalist; he has completed Masters degrees in Politics of Black America and another in Global Economic Development.

"We live in a society that professes to offer us everything we want – the newest technological product to enhance existence, fairtrade food for the fair-minded, fast food for the furiously busy, even the space to define oneself as one would like to be defined. Yet not only is depression currently the most common psychological illness but it is on the rise. In fact, the World Health Organisation estimates that by 2020 it will be second only to heart disease as the leading cause of illness and death. Christians are not immune to depression."

"As our understanding of mental illness becomes more holistic, several new therapy methods are emerging. This day is based on the Human Givens approach. It considers that getting our basic emotional needs met in the right measure forms the foundation for good mental health. The Human Givens approach is positive and based on how our brain functions. There will be information about mental health, depression and how to connect this with wisdom from the Bible. There will also be some practical exercises and group discussion. The goal is to equip participants with several practical and effective “tools” for helping others and for taking good care of their own mental health."

This event be appropriate for counsellors, those involved in pastoral care with no professional background, those who have personal experience of suffering, or anyone with an interest in mental health and spirituality.

Dr Maarit Brooks has practised as a GP for over 20 years in this country and many others around the world. She is also a fully qualified and passionate Human Givens therapist. She uses the Human Givens approach in her work daily to help her patients. She has also run courses in Rwanda teaching how to help survivors of the genocide recover from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. She is a mother of three and married to Ian. She is a member of Christ Church, Clifton.

Sleeping rough for Bristol homeless charities

More than 60 people spent a damp night sleeping rough in Bristol to raise money for local charities supporting the homeless.

Volunteers aged between 14 and 81, did their best to get a few hours sleep on Friday night in the grounds of Pip 'n' Jay Church on Tower Hill, despite low temperatures and drizzly rain.

Alan, who works for Crisis Centre Ministries and Alabaré Christian Care Centres in Bristol, used to live on the streets in Cardiff after his relationship with his family broke down when he became addicted to alcohol.

He said: "It brought back a lot of horrible memories. At least this time, when I got up in the morning I knew I was going home to get clean and warm."

"But when you're homeless, you wake up and realise you have to walk around outside all day, find some food, and then do the same thing the next night. I think it was good for people to realise what the conditions can be like for people living on the streets."

He estimated that there are more than 50 people sleeping rough in Bristol every night.
